What is mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. It is a rare form of cancer in which malignant cells are found in the sac lining of various organs and cavities of the body, known as the mesothelium.
Difficult to diagnose and treat, prognosis for mesothelioma is generally poor. Virtually all cases of malignant mesothelioma are attributable to asbestos exposure, making this an preventable cancer.
Getting Information on Mesothelioma
Statistically, mesothelioma is a rare cancer: about three to four thousand cases are diagnosed in the US each year. This can make finding information on mesothelioma somewhat tricky. As an "orphan" disease, mesothelioma is not a common diagnosis for most doctors to make, and many physicians may be unfamiliar with the latest surgical techniques, novel drugs, and clinical trials available.
Mesothelioma information is understandably grave, but there is hope available in the form of support groups and mesothelioma specialists.
Types of Mesothelioma
- Pleural Mesothelioma ("Mesothelioma Lung Cancer")
- The most common type of mesothelioma, it is sometimes hard to the layman to understand the difference between lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma because both affect the functioning of the lungs and are generally located in the same area. Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) arises out of the pleura, the lining which allows the lungs to slide smoothly against the chest walls and other organs as they expand and contract.
- Abdominal Mesothelioma (Peritoneal Mesothelioma)
- Abdominal mesothelioma, or malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (which is sometimes, but less often, abbreviated as MPM, like pleural mesothelioma) develops in the lining of the abdomen, which surrounds and protects the organs in the lower part of the body. While peritoneal mesothelioma is more rare than pleural, it is still far more common than mesothelioma of the lining of the heart or internal reproductive organs.
- Pericardial Mesothelioma
- Surrounding the heart is a sac-like membrane known as the pericardium. Mesothelial tumors of the pericardium is known as peritoneal mesothelioma.
- Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis Testis
- Both men and women have mesothelial membranes surrounding their internal reproductive organs; in men, this is the tunica vaginalis testis and in women, the tunica serosa uteri.
