Asbestos' Effect on Health

Asbestos health effects can be serious and fatal. Asbestos fibers can affect on your health if inhaled or injested; because they are lightweight, it's very easy to inhale them. Their microscopic size means that a dust invisible to the naked eye can still have a high concentration of asbestos fibers in it.

  • There is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos.
  • The more you are exposed to asbestos, the greater chance you have of developing an asbestos-related disease.

Effects of Asbestos

Asbestos exposure causes several asbestos-related diseases, or ARDS. Asbestosis is a non-cancerous condition caused by scarring of the delicate tissues of the lung by the fibers of asbestos. Lung cancer, mesothelioma (a rare cancer of the lining of the chest and abdomen lining), cancer of the stomach, intestines, and rectum are all cancers caused by asbestos.

The first signs of an asbestos-related disease may develop as late as 30 years after the exposure to asbestos. This long latency period between exposure and disease progression has at times made it difficult for workers to understand detrimental the effects of asbestos on health. Many multi-generational employees viewed their disease symptoms and simply family characteristics because their fathers and grandfathers had also experienced the shortness of breath, clubbed fingers, and blue nails that often accompany asbestos diseases.
