Asbestos and Mesothelioma:Asbestos ExposureAlthough prolonged asbestos exposure significantly increases your chances of developing an asbestos related disease, like asbestosis or mesothelioma, even minor exposure can put you at risk. Wives being exposed by shaking out their husbands' asbestos-dusted clothes are not uncommon. Unfortunately neither are stories of second-hand asbestos exposure to the children of those who worked with asbestos. (This is known as paraoccupational exposure.) Many people who have been exposed to asbestos will not become ill, but for those that do, it may take 10 to 40 years for symptoms to show up.
